    Description

    W. W. Grout's Record in Congress For Sixteen Years. Campaign letter running for U S Senate to replace Justin S Morrill after his death. Interestingly the campaign letter is not in favor of General Grout but by showing his record to be less than stellar it promotes the Hon Charles A Prouty, but does not even mention his name until the very last sentence. Sent out by John Young from Newport VT April 17, 1900. In original mailig envelope to a Arthur George East Calais VT. Green 1 cent Franklin stamp, Newport VT cancellation. Certainly not how the politicians would recommend it today; Gen Grout's name is repeated over and over but the man he is promoting is only mentioned once at the very end. William P Dillingham ended up becoming Senator in 1900 and served to 1923. W W Grout served in U S House 1885-1901. Prouty was a lawyer and businessman, serves as Vt States Attorney 1882, 1884, Vt House 1888, nominated by President Grover Cleveland to the Interstate Commerce Commission, re appointed by Theodore Roosevelt 1901, 1907. Neat piece of Vt political history.Postage and handling: .50 regular USA mail. We ship to USA addresses only.
