Signed Joseph McCarthy Letter; Dated Dec. 23, 1954 "Continue the Fight"
Up for your consideration is a letter from Joseph McCarthy on United States Senate/Committee on Government Operations Stationery to an Illinois supporter. He references "being able to continue the fight" because of the interest "so many good Americans like you" have shown. Dated December 23, 1954. Signed with what looks like a fountain pen. Orignal envelope, with 3 cent stamp, and "free" crossed out under the return address. He apparently had scruples about his postage charges! Interesting to note that this letter was written just six months after Joseph McCarthy, the Senator from Wisconsin, was censured by the Senate for his behavior in pursuing "communists". Obviously, the addressees were still supporters and believers in his cause. Great slice of American history! The letter is in very clean condition, no tears or excessive folding. It has been folded in both directions. The envelope has been torn open at the flap, and also folded in half. Postmarked Dec. 23, 1954. Joseph Raymond "Joe" McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was an American politician who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion. He was noted for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere. Ultimately, his tactics and inability to substantiate his claims led him to be censured by the United States Senate.
