BALLOON OF THE 1900'S
By the early years of this century the balloon as a means of air transport had
been superceded by the airship and aeroplane and was used chiefly for sport.
Gordon Bennett, an Englishman and pioneer of ballooning inaugurated an
international long-distance competition for balloons and the one seen here took part
in the annual race of 1906. The balloon. however, still holds the record
for the greatest height achieved by man.
